What Is 3D Laser Scanning?

Three dimensional laser scanning, sometimes called "digitizing," is the process of capturing the geometry of existing physical objects through the use of laser-emitting camera-like devices.

A low-power pinpoint laser traverses the area where the scanning device is aimed, reflecting back to the device from any still object(s) in its path. With these reflections the device can ascertain and record the color, shape, distance, and location of anything in the laser's path. A single pass scan usually takes only seconds, so multiple scans are taken from different angles. From this information, an amazingly accurate three-dimensional digital replica can be compiled and exported in various file formats.

Laser Scanning Accuracy

Our laser scanning technologies capture the 3D definition of both small and large objects.

Short-range, small format scanning:

  • Part size: <1 x 1 x 1 in. to 47 x 35 x 16 in.
  • Scan range: 2 to 8 ft.

Long-range, large format scanning:

  • Scan range: 165 ft. +
  • Scan field: 360 x 270°

3D File Generation

Working with millions of data point requires specialized software and the experience and skills to use it. At Berding 3D Scanning, we have both.

The output of our work is a 3D file that can be used directly in processes such as rapid prototyping or imported into your 3D CAD software for digital documentation; engineering design and analysis; measurement and inspection; or manufacturing.

Your 3D data is available in any of the following formats:

  • STL
  • DXF
  • IGES
  • STEP
  • AutoCad Inventor
  • Rhino
  • SolidWorks
  • Solid Edge
  • Unigraphics
  • PRO/Engineer

Other formats are also available for specialized applications. Please contact us if your file format is not listed.
